Packaging Face-off: Sunscreen Showdown

Sunscreen comes in a few different types of packaging. Here's how to dispose of each kind.
In terms of disposal, aerosol sunscreens are the worst kind. Aerosols are pressurized, and if sent to the recycling facility they are liable to burst, creating a major hazard for workers. Aerosols of any kind are considered hazardous waste, and empty aerosol sunscreens should be brought to a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility for proper disposal.
Sunscreens can also come in a soft plastic tube, the squeezable kind that typically has a triangle shape at the top. This packaging is not recyclable, and should go into the trash when you are done with it.
Sunscreens in a hard plastic bottle, with a flip cap or sometimes a pump, are recyclable in your blue bin! Just make sure to give it a rinse before recycling. Cap is okay to be left on, but if it has a pump please remove the pump.
