IWMA Intern
Thank you for your interest in joining the team at the San Luis Obispo County Integrated Waste Management Authority! The IWMA is a small, but mighty team who serves as a bridge between local government and solid waste professionals, equips our community to manage their resources responsibly, and designs and implements programs for our community to stay compliant with mandated state laws.
IWMA is seeking a part-time Intern for the 2026-2027 Academic Year to support our programs and activities that help us achieve our vision of reducing waste to preserve and enhance a safe and healthy environment in San Luis Obispo County. You will work collaboratively with our team to support our work, review our programs and help us serve our County. This is an ideal role for an environmental studies, resources management, or communications student interested in gaining experience in an environmentally-focused public sector agency.
Hours: ~10-15 hours per week, flexible based on academic schedule
Pay: $20/hour
Work Location: In Person in San Luis Obispo, CA 93405
Duration: August 31, 2026 – April 30, 2027
Responsibilities:
Depending on your skills and interests, your responsibilities may include:
- Support IWMA staff site visits to improve waste reduction and recycling practices
- Craft communications and respond to inquiries regarding sustainable best practices in SLO County
- Analyze and compile environmental data and help prepare reports and presentations to local partners and regulatory agencies
- Review metrics for environmental programs and initiatives and make recommendations to management to improve service delivery
- Support the IWMA’s multi-platform community outreach and engagement activities
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office
- Interest in sustainability, waste management, or environmental studies/systems.
- Clear and professional writing style.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
- Familiarity with San Luis Obispo County communities a plus.
