Food Waste

Did all of the food you purchased on your last shopping trip end up being consumed? Chances are, probably not. Over 40% of the food produced in America isn’t eaten.  Natural resources are used to grow, harvest, package food, and deliver those products to consumers, so every time food is thrown away, we waste money and valuable materials.

Food waste in our landfills produces methane, a greenhouse gas over 80x more potent than carbon dioxide. The release of methane gas is a major driver of global climate change.

Participating in our local residential food waste recycling program is one of the easiest switches you can make to have a huge impact on the health of our planet!

Free Residential Food Waste Program

In San Luis Obispo County, garbage providers are required to provide you with green organics collection service. Included in this program is food waste collection! You collect your kitchen food scraps indoors, and empty into your curbside green bin for weekly pick-up. If you have any questions, call the IWMA at 805-782-8530 or contact your waste collection service provider to get started.
